Halloween - The Cursed Town

Wargaming Halloween!

A first time for us, we’ve tackled a Halloween game combining elements of several platforms: D&D, MMOs/video games and wargaming (using Battlefield Royale Rules). Designing profiles using BFR’s alpha version software, six adventurers from across time and space embarked on a horror style journey into a cursed town.

This is a brief account of that adventure, told with some descriptions and quotes from the quest. The group didn’t complete ALL the content, but got through most of it (basically a few missing plot/lore notes that had been missed). Also bear in mind that not every single last detail is covered here – it’s just the players’ experience. Wait till you see how much loot 'Ralf the Ork' got! Hope you enjoy it!

Just before we dive into the adventure, we’re looking for opinions and ideas from hobbyists and wargaming commanders across the world toward a project. Also, we're releasing a Free E-Book, that's still in development.

Now without further ado, our grand tale begins…

(BTW: You can click any of these images to enlarge them)

Players Briefing:

‘For reasons you can’t quite remember, you find yourself with a random party of adventurers and have come across a desolate, cursed town. Something is amiss and you feel called to investigate. You can’t quite clear your mind as to why you’re here, though at the edge of perception you sense an unknown force driving you onward. Whether this is a nightmare or reality, only you can be the judge. Though if it is a nightmare, just remember… all dreams are but another reality.’

I wanted to have the Fett on the team, but it wasn't to be this time!

Introducing: Our Heroes
Each character has their profile complete with ranged and melee weapons along with some special abilities. In addition, each character has their own background story.

Random Editor’s Note:
Although I played as a customized Kharn the Betrayer, I actually wanted to play as Boba Fett… though my miniature hadn’t arrived yet!

1. Zanuka Natsume – [Twilight Knight, Kingdom Death]

Zanuka Natsume was trained as a Twilight Knight, wearing light armour and wielding a large sword. Being of Norn origin, she has a surprisingly powerful frame and is taller than most humans. She has a charismatic spirit and her heart yearns for adventures. When she’s not on some quest or journey, she’s managing the local inn, cooking and also enjoying samples of her various alcoholic beverages (to test their quality, of course). Having been gone for some years, she is horrified to return and see the state of the town she once called home…

2. Olly McFlurry [Skorne Titan Gladiator, Hordes]
Olly McFlurry

Little is to be said of Olly McFlurry – he’s big, strong and has a gentle side, but his intellect leaves something to be desired. When he isn’t a berserk killing machine, he’s getting in touch with his gentle side, appreciating the smaller creatures and critters in life. When not in battle, he has often worked as a Labourer for the Skorne Empire, but any work they can get out of him is a bonus, as he is easily distracted and entertained by just bashing some rocks together. A simple life, but a good life.

3.  Kharn the Betrayer [Chaos Space Marine, Warhammer 40,000]
What a guy. Kharn the Betrayer is most famous as a Berserker and Champion of Khorne, but his terrible reputation aside, he’s a fun guy both outside and in the heat of battle. Indeed, many of his fans observe him to be quite intelligent, observant and somewhat lucky. He is from the World Eaters Legion of Chaos Marines, having served under his Primarch as Equerry and a Captain. When he isn’t decapitating with his trusty chainaxe ‘Gorechild’ (or otherwise screaming KILL MAIM BURN), he has taken an interest in art, in particular painting and drawing… much to the dismay of art critics from the Slaanesh Cult.

Kharn the Betrayer. What a guy.

4. Ralf the Ork (Ork, Warhammer 40,000]

Ralf is not quite your typical Ork. Sure, he loves to loot (what Ork doesn’t?), but he likes to loot things that not even the other Orks will loot. When it’s time to fight, Ralf loves to use his huge ‘Evizkerator’, a massive choppa that maims and pulverizes as he swings it. Unbeknownst to his Warboss, Ralf is actually a really cunning Ork with extraordinary luck – stealing things in broad daylight and being unnoticed, even right in front of those who previously owned those goods.

5. Farseer Phil Collins [Eldar, Warhammer 40,000]

Farseer Phil Collins is somewhat cold and uncaring for those outside the Eldar race. Indeed, he wouldn’t mind sitting back and watching the allies of this story fight it out and die while he did nothing. His only real interest in participating is for his own curiosity and perhaps to get out of this hell hole. In battle, Farseer Phil is a talented Psyker, casting powerful spells such as ‘Fusion Flare’, but also adept at wielding his spear both at close quarters and psychically charging it for a throwing attack. In addition to his duties as a Farseer, he has passion for the arts of a Bonesinger.

Farseer Phil Collins lights things up!

Caligore shoots with his Xeno Hunting Bolter
6. Caligore Luminum [Deathwatch Techmarine (Dark Angel), Warhammer 40,000]

Caligore Luminum has a wide variety of experiences, even for a Space Marine. He serves as a Tech Marine for the Dark Angels, his Chapter, but is currently serving under the elite alien hunting force known as the Deathwatch. When he isn’t actively on duty, he enjoys researching old relics and technology, especially tinkering with weapons and machinery. In person, Caligore is a little aloof, preferring his own company and tinkering with equipment, only communicating with others on a ‘need to’ basis. Thanks to his augmentations and technology, Caligore can fight well at range and melee, also using scanner technology to observe his foes and environment.

Our players begin at the edge of the town, ready to begin Chapter 1 of this tale…

Chapter 1 – Dead Town

The six adventurer’s collected their senses and observed each other. Most of them were speechless, and untrusting, except for the charismatic Twilight Knight Zanuka, who tried to break the ice. However, the awkward silence didn't last long as dozens of shuffling feet were heard down in the center of the village.

Kharn revved up Gorechild and goaded Olly into battle. There was killing to be had.
Before long the two berserkers, Kharn followed by Olly, started down the town path, eager to kill some arrogant Necromancer with a legion of zombies. The other adventurers were not far behind, except for the Farseer Phil Collins. He held back, as he wanted to observe what would happen.

Techmarine Caligore stepped in, his Xeno Bolter roaring with a hail of rounds, devastating some of the zombies.

Kharn, Zanuka, Ralf and Olly got into the thick of it, enduring evil magic from the Necromancer and slaying many zombies. The Necromancer was feverishly trying to summon more undead, but he couldn’t keep up with the rate of killing performed by the adventurers. Caligore and some other party members took damage, but continued the fight.

Phil Collins finally joined in, unleashing a Fusion Flare and a few other support spells. He tried to give the party an enchantment to enhance their prowess, but Kharn was visually unhappy and tried to resist the boon – which didn’t happen. Kharn was blessed with Eldar magic, much to his disgust.
Ralf was severely damaged by the fight, but kept attacking. He was a ‘lucky Ork’, and wasn’t going to go down without a fight.

After much hacking, slashing and burning, the Necromancer and his zombies were permanently dead.
When the fight was over, they started to discuss about the loot found on the Corpse Cart. They found a few nice items in possession of the Necromancer, but not on the zombies… Kharn then spoke his first cogent sentence on the adventure: “They were zombies?”

They found the following items:

A Crypt Stalker Longbow, Unholy Torches, a Dark Shroud and a Keyring containing a couple keys. Most curious was the Dark Shroud – it was a living cloak that matched the size of its wearer, protecting them from damage and attacking enemies. Olly McFlurry was in love with it – to him it smelled like happy, so he took it.

Explore the Town
The party could now explore the town with the Necromancer dead. The following things drew their attention:

I) Searching for food and supplies
II) A little girl singing by the well
III) Searching for treasure
IV) Searching the blacksmith
V) Investigating a whimpering voice nearby

First of all, the party looked into the food around the place. There was much produce, meat, spices and reagents, mostly unspoiled. Zanuka with her cooking experience opted to cook up a meal with the food, rather than eat the food raw. By doing so, they each had a meal that could restore all their lost HP.

Next, they searched the town for treasure and found six chests. The party all opened their own chests either by picking the lock or smashing it apart – everyone had succeeded (lucky!). Of note were the contents that Olly and Zanuka found…

Olly smashed his treasure chest open, discovering a dead cat. There was a gem inside the cat’s collar that was sent flying as Olly smashed the chest, and his perception was high enough to see it. Afterward, Olly decided he liked the dead kitty, so he decided to keep it and pat it (apparently he didn't know it was dead).

Zanuka had the final chest which was the hardest to open. Fortunately, she had access to a chest key held by the Necromancer. The chest contained ‘The One Ring’, which increased her stats by one point. One ring to rule them all? Perhaps.

Two notes were discovered in the chests, entries of a diary from a villager:

4# Chelsea isn’t the same. Her father sealed the cave behind him, saying that what he saw cannot be unseen. Whatever that meant.

6# Our town elected a new mayor a few months ago, which is fine and all, but he has been acting quite odd. Our latest tragedy is that some of the townsfolk have been getting sick while others are dead, wheeled out onto corpse carts in droves. The place hasn't been the same since Chelsea fell into the well, but especially upon her return. Have we been cursed? The priest at the temple, although anxious, assures us that he and the mayor are doing their best to look after our town… feeling strange… think I need to lie down for a while…

At the blacksmith, the party discovered an unfinished Razor Sword. Caligore the Techmarine opted to fix it, and succeeded. He gave the Razor Sword to Zanuka, which upgraded her ATK stat.

Next, the party thought they could hear a voice whimpering somewhere nearby. Zanuka discovered a merchant trapped in a cellar, who opened his shop to the party. Furthermore, Zanuka with her charisma managed to haggle the merchant.

Kharn with his gold (found in a chest) bought an Old Ocarina (for his artistic pursuits) and an Armour Kit, upgrading the effectiveness of his Power Armour. The Ocarina had an in-game use of being able to alter time on a few occasions before it would become unusable.

Olly was a little different, he tried to offer his (dead) pet cat as legal tender, but the merchant anxiously declined. Instead, Olly put the rare gem he found back into the cat’s collar, then HANDED THE CAT over. The merchant although disturbed, accepted that and sold him an Assault Cannon and a Mysterious Egg, which hatched into a drake hatchling! Olly was delighted beyond words – not that he said much anyway.

Only one thing was left to check out in the village: who was that little girl near the well?

Now slowly sing: "Ring around the rosie..."

-Chapter II: The Little Girl-

With the village explored, they next approached the little girl, who spoke to them:

Little Girl: Hello, how are you? I’m looking for mother, but I haven't seen her for a long time. The villagers are gone... they all started to get sick so Daddy and I tried to hide the people who were healthy. Brother went looking for little Harriet, but I don't think he knows that the grownups are gone. Could you go find him?  Daddy said he'll be right back once he's done talking to mummy and chopping the meat for dinner. Oh! While you’re here, will you play with me, <tee hee>? I'm so lonely.

The party reluctantly agreed to play, however, there was something really wrong – she wanted to play hangman, and Olly could feel something invisible tightening around his neck.

Poor Olly McFlurry was in trouble!

Farseer Phil Collins took some delight in the situation, and threw in some bad letters. By the time they guessed the word, there was only one more mistake before Olly would be ‘hung’.

The word was Necrophiliac. Charming.
Exterior of the Temple

Upon guessing the word, the Little Girl was delighted.

Little Girl: Tee hee hee! I heard one of the neighbours was one of those – that’s naughty, right?

She began to skip to an ominous looking Temple in the distance. The party then observed a crate of loot, amongst the items a suicide noose, a filthy murderer’s dagger and a cursed, ghostly mirror.

Kharn threw the mirror at the little girl, hitting her but shattering the mirror. The little girl’s flesh melted into the ground, only leaving her clothes behind. The party was disturbed, questioning if the thing they spoke to was even human.

Kharn decided to take the Murderer’s Dagger. He suspected it would come in handy…

Ralf took the Suicide Noose. Guess rope might be handy for something?

Ralf also saw another looting opportunity – he grabbed the little girl’s remaining clothes and forced them on. “A bute-a-full dress, hur hur.” Ralf looked ridiculous, but most of the party didn’t care what the Ork did.

Where the mirror broke, souls swirled around in the air then manifested as Skeletal Knights. Who asked the group:

Warrior Arcanus: We were the king’s royal guard, our souls bound to him even in death by that mirror. Could you please escort us to his tomb on your journey? We seek an end to his servitude.

They were the Warriors Arcanus, loyal to the king even in death. The party agreed to escort them, so they made their way to the Graveyard.

The Warriors Arcanus

Upon reaching the graveyard, they found a mysterious individual, a strong, lean man with two machine guns, possessing some kind of device. Upon seeing the group, he spoke to them:

Mysterious Man: “I think I can get us out of here, but we need to help each other out. I got this teleport device but it’s busted.”

Caligore, the Techmarine stepped up to inspect the device the fellow had found. Upon looking at it, he misjudged its true purpose:
‘Upon inspection, Caligore thought that it was an old bread toaster with extra buttons and LED lights wired into it. He handed it back to him and wished him luck with it, though Caligore did question this fellow’s sanity.’

Ralf, looking upon the ‘toaster’ demanded that he give it to him. The man reluctantly handed it over, then headed to the village to salvage parts.

Behind where the man stood, was the graveyard gate held tight by a very strange lock. No one could pick it. Olly decided that he could ram the graveyard gate open, but upon smashing into it, he had disfigured the gate. He wanted to try again, but the party thought it best to investigate elsewhere first. What was with that gate?

The group headed to a watch tower and found a Sniper Bow, nice! Next, they looked all around from inside the tower and saw a little boy who seemed to be searching for something.

The adventurers headed in his direction…

-Chapter III: Have You Seen Him?-

Upon reaching the boy the group was extremely hesitant to speak to him, especially after the incident with the little girl... however, Zanuka decided to speak to him. After all, she had lived here once…

Boy: Ello’ gov’nors! I’m looking for Harriet, my pet spider. Could you help me find her? She’s probably scared, tired and hungry out there. If you find her, I’ll give you something I found.

The party then thought that he was the brother the strange little girl mentioned, they asked about her:

Boy: What? I’m an only child. My parents were bakers, but they got sick. Do you mean the creepy girl who had a crush on me or something? She got even weirder after she fell down the well. I kept my distance when all that happened.

The party was a little surprised, but then asked about his pet spider’s appearance. A fairly large spider then appeared with impeccable timing.

Boy: Just like that! Go after her!

The adventurers ran after the spider, the Warriors Arcanus tailing behind.

The spider fled into the forest. Ralf and Kharn ran in first (what a guy), hesitantly followed by Olly. Farseer Phil Collins followed next, while Techmarine Caligore (who suspected an attack) took a firing position just inside the woods. Zanuka didn’t want to be left with the Warriors Arcanus (who creeped her out) so she ran ahead to join up with the other melee fighters.

Hope you don't have arachnophobia...

What they found wasn’t what they hoped – the little spider was one of at least a dozen others its size, and they were hungry. The arachnids leapt from dead trees toward the adventurers, but Farseer Phil in his questionable wisdom decided to cast Fusion Flare on them while in the forest. He set the woods on fire, and it was quite intense at that. The spiders were dwindling quickly, but that didn’t stop them crawling over and biting them.

When the adventurers had finished slashing and squishing, the Spider Mother emerged, and it was huge.

With it emerged even more spiders who were apparently just babies. Bursting out of the dead tree trunks were thousands of tiny spiders, crawling into armour and biting. The flames of the forest were helping thin out the swarm, but it was crazy.

Kharn died in the literal heat of that battle, taken out by the Spider Queen, but the party eventually emerged victorious. The flames in the forest fire died down at the end of the fight.

The Spider Queen had various loot, including a ‘Necrotic Fang Necklace’, Web Shooters and Nutritious Spider Eggs for the party to eat. Lastly, Phil Collins found a half-digested arm, which was clutching tightly the Graveyard Key…
Using one of their Life Stones, the party resurrected Kharn. You can’t keep a good guy down it seems!

Not long after, the little boy came across them. Turns out the Spider Queen was once his little Harriet!

The little boy was sad, but was good on his promise – he handed them a strange, orange pumpkin themed whistle. Olly was super excited and took it – blowing into it while his pet drake perched upon his head.

Bye bye, Harriet!

The whistle had stirred something near the giant pumpkin patch, but the group had one stop to make before going there…

-Chapter IV: More Cheer in a Graveyard-

The graveyard lock gave a satisfying click as it opened. Although the entire gate was damaged from Olly’s ram earlier, it still opened. Not far away was the King’s Tomb, the site the Warriors Arcanus were desperate to reach.

There was an inscription on the tomb: “Here lies the King, who died defending his people. May his sacrifice not be in vain.”

The spirit of the King spoke to the group: What? You, the Warriors Arcanum, will serve me forever! Strangers, leave or be vanquished.

Zanuka, the most charismatic, attempted to speak to the king using her wit and charm, but failed on both accounts.

Olly attempted to threaten the king shouting: Go, or I’ll punch you in the spirit boingloins!

The king was neither convinced nor threatened, so the party left them be. The King and his guard then vanished.

The king’s tomb was cursed, however….

Ralf, the lucky Ork had somehow looted the King’s tomb without triggering the trap or alerting the King and his guard. He shared some of his spoils, but had done very well for himself – he had a suit of armour, the King’s shield and a strange looking key among other things. Go Ralf!

Ralf handed a Dragon’s Emerald to Olly which he had also found, who used it on his pet drake…. It grew into a mighty dragon!

Guess you could say the dragon leveled up? Pokemon Evolution maybe?

After leaving the King’s tomb behind, the group inspected the graveyard finding a mix of open and full graves. On some of the tombstones read some unusual messages:

- “Poor old Bill – we didn’t know you in life, and now you’re dead.”
- “’
Mr. K. Dunn. Dead.’ At 2 gold per word, that's all you get."
- “You cheap ingrates buried me naked!”

In the corner, Zanuka and Farseer Phil noticed a bag of gold. However, the Farseer managed to get it first. It was next to the skeletal remains of a grave robber.

After that, one grave stood out from the rest, one that was unmarked. It was unusually eerie and forboding.

Some members of the party made a silent prayer for the deceased, but suddenly the graveyard went silent, an eerie breeze gently caressing their bodies. They felt like they were called to stay… but at the edge of perception, they thought they could hear a woman crying and whispering words that couldn’t quite be made out…

The Eldar Farseer thought at first she could’ve been a banshee, but concluded that she died cursed and blind. Her soul grieving and screaming in constant anguish.

A party member picked a rose and placed it on the grave. Muffled but audible sobbing could be heard beneath the earth.

A party member spoke back to the voice, which lead to the first comprehensible words spoken by the thing in the earth.

Woman’s Voice: “My daughter watches with her empty eyes from the darkness.”

Before the party could react, shadowy tendrils crept up from the ground… battle then began!

This woman had terrifying powers, however, Kharn’s arcane resistance caused almost all of those attacks to be ineffective. She was defeated and granted peace, now with the help of a dragon on their team.
On her body, the party found a haunted locket with a picture of a little girl. She was wearing a pink dress and had blonde hair… Ralf took it.
There was also a vial of her tears. Kharn drank them… I suppose the lack of bloodshed was making him thirsty. It gave him the ability to regenerate HP in combat and made him ‘Fearsome’.

Lastly in the graveyard, there were some mausoleums. Exploring them revealed a monstrous looking male, wearing flayed skin over his exposed muscles. He appeared to be hacking apart the flesh of deceased villagers and sorting them into piles defined by their body parts. He was so fixated on his task that the party’s presence hadn’t alerted him yet.

The party agreed to try a sneak attack, however, half the party failed the agility check, causing this terrifying man to get the jump on them instead!
He immediately charged Zanuka, nearly slaying her in his ambush! However, she drank a Health Potion, sparing her from the embrace of death.
Even with 7 or so people attacking him, this freak was putting up quite a fight. Farseer Phil Collins was slain by his cleaver.
The party eventually killed him – in his death throes, he lashed out one more time - he slew Kharn – his second death in the adventure so far.
Upon looting, they found what appeared to be a butcher’s cleaver, it was cursed but deadly sharp.

He also had a Diary, which Ralf (in a creepy way) stowed in his loot pile. It read as follows:

‘I went after Chelsea when she fell in the well. It was mostly dry, so I could go down deep into the hole. At the bottom I found a narrow tunnel. I called for Chelsea’s name: I thought I could hear her faintly in the distance. It felt like days that I was down there… however, after some time I came across a great cave with an ancient shrine to some goddess. I ventured further and came across a large creature, it had the appearance of a crustacean but had many limbs, a great mouth and looked as though it had skin and flesh like that of a person. I couldn’t see if it had eyes, but it spoke to me, saying it had kept my daughter alive and for me to take her back home. I was suspicious, but seeing my daughter lying on the ground, I didn’t hesitate. She was covered in a clear, viscous fluid and her clothing in scraps, but she was alive…. I was so relieved. When I examined her, for some reason her skin looked perfect, vibrant even. The creature instructed me to not mention what happened here, so I never will, not even to Martha… lest I look upon its disturbing form again.”

Ello' Govnors...

Not long after reading it, a blood red worm burst out of the giant man’s body, and burrowed into Techmarine Caligore. It increased his HP capacity and gave him the ability to regenerate HP in combat, but he might want to look into that later. It’s kind of gross. It was a 'Blood Symbiote', a worm that lives off a host but enhances them too.

-Chapter V: Pumpkin Party-

The group made their way to the pumpkin patch, stirred by the Pumpkin Whistle in Olly’s possession. There were 8 or so adventurers, but all with pumpkin heads…

Zanuka stood to speak, as the other members were generally too violent, arrogant, stupid or reclusive to address them with proper etiquette.

Zanuka spoke to their leader, a Pumpkin Knight in heavy armour. She inquired about their business here, to which he said:

Pumpkin Leader:We’re mercenaries just passing through; going to check the village for loot and whatnot.’

The group didn’t want to say they had basically ransacked the ghost town of a village, but instead tried to recruit them, secretly with the intentions of slaying them before handing over any real treasure… Zanuka asked to hire them, to which they said:

Pumpkin Leader: ‘Aw gee. We aren’t cheap, the missus is back home preggers and I don’t have time to waste. Make it worth our while and we could do it.’

Using her Charisma and the bag of gold that Farseer Phil Collins had, Zanuka hired the Pumpkin Adventurers as allies.

Zanuka Natsume: There’s plenty of loot here. We’ll give you some now and share the spoils when we’re done.

Pumpkin Leader: Alright, you convinced us. Where’s the loot at?”

Most of the party actually wanted to kill the pumpkin people when all threats in this horror town were dealt with, but time would tell what would happen.

Only one notable landmark remained – the temple.

-Chapter VI: The Temple-

As the group closed in on the temple, they sensed a shift in the air. Not quite unease, not quite fear. The sign out the front read ‘registered members only – outsiders will be executed’. Charming.

They could hear monotone voices singing dark ritualistic chants in the ruined temple.

Remember, we sacrifice the chickens on Tuesdays

Farseer Phil Collins noticed some hoods they could use as disguises. Most of the group entered the temple, wearing the outfits and chanting in a similar manner.

What appeared to be a cultist leader made eye contact upon them entering, but promptly continued reading a tome. They approached a nearby cultist.

Zanuka asked the cultist what was going on, explaining they were new the cult. The cultist was unconvinced of their plight and replied:

Cultist: Look, if you want to pester me with questions, you should’ve read the handbook of the Flesh Goddess upon your induction, you dimwit.

Olly McFlurry took offense to this, grabbed him, slammed him into a pillar and gave a non-lethal punch to the cultist, demanding answers, the startled cultist then answered:

Cultist: Tonight, we are revering the Flesh Goddess, a creature we believe was sealed upon these hallowed grounds in ancient times, before the village was built. 1000 years ago her spirit possessed a woman and manifested. Through her power, she gave birth to a duplicate of that woman’s body then subtly manipulated the village. She can whisper to those of weak will, and delights in the curiosity and weakness of humans. Tonight we wish to call her forth and embrace her with love and acceptance as our master... but, we aren’t having much luck. It’s like we’re missing something, someone maybe? Only the higher ups have actually SEEN the goddess.

Seeing no more information could be gleaned, Zanuka daringly declared to the cult:

Zanuka: ‘He’s a virgin, sacrifice him!’

The plan worked - the cultist was dragged up and stripped upon the altar, ready to be killed. The cultist leader thanked Zanuka and her friends for their contribution and requested them to unveil their hoods.

Kharn, Ralf, Olly and the others didn’t hesitate for a surprise attack!

They gunned and butchered most of the cultists, including their leader, before they could even react. One of the pumpkin mercenaries fought it out with a Cultist Blade Mistress and defeated her, but nearly died in the process.

There was no loot among the cultists, disappointing for the pumpkin people but there was sure to be something more to this ominous temple then meets the eyes…

And sure enough, there was something more – Caligore with his scanning equipment detected an anomaly in the stone pillar up the back, and that there was a secret alcove hiding something.

Olly pushed the pillar and smashed the entrance to a secret stash – which had rotten food, a bottle of holy water (with the label, throw me at a zombie), Life Stones and a recently dead priest clutching a confession letter. The letter read as follows:

“I can no longer live with my guilt, so I’m writing my confession here for anyone who finds it... my shame and this temple are now my prison. The new mayor approached me before he came into office, and offered me riches if I should win him the seat as mayor. I did this, and over time, the deeds he got me to perform progressively became worse. Before I knew it, I was aiding and protecting a monster, along with a cult he belonged to – some ‘Goddess of Flesh’ or whatever it was. By doing this, I had become a monster myself.

He told me that a spirit came to him, said for us to do these things. He assured me that my actions were justified and would be rewarded. The small transgressions are too numerous to count, but the three worst things I did are unspeakable. Firstly, I was the one who pushed the poor girl into the well. Secondly, I helped spread the plague that claimed the folk of this town, and worse still, arranged to put the carcasses into the tunnels beneath the village, to the undertakers’ naivety.  But my worst crime is against humanity itself, for it was I who sired the mass of flesh that spawned from that abomination below. The creature threatened my life, so I did the task. I pray that my soul will receive mercy in the next life. Heaven help this town, for I sentenced it to death.”

After reading it, the priest sprung to life - he was shrouded with powerful, dark magic. Kharn, who was looking at the holy water, threw it at the priest which burned it, inflicting damage.
The group then engaged in a battle against the priest – having to slay it quickly as should Kharn fail to resist the powers it wielded, they would soon be overwhelmed.

Kharn couldn’t resist everything, but the group succeeded – granted that some perished in the fight, such as Farseer Phil Collins and some pumpkin mercenaries. Phil was revived with a Life Stone however.
With the priest’s final breath and release from torment, he granted the group a blessing, giving them an increase to their HP capacity. The Farseer also found a Spirit Wand, which augmented his already formidable psychic powers.

After having a moment to rest, the group inspected the altar and found three sockets for which some of the keys found along the way could fit into.

They activated the mechanism, which opened. Sounds could be heard from below, while the caves, caverns, nooks and crannies outside the temple split open – the dead were rising in mass!
What looked to be 100 zombies surrounded the temple, and something was rapidly arriving from the hidden vault below… the time to fight was now!

I iz Ralf, hur hur.

The pumpkin party was a fantastic help against the zombies, their firepower and melee prowess greatly aiding the adventurers.

Everyone pitched in to fight off the undead horde, even Farseer Phil Collins was blasting away… however, he was the first to encounter the thing below… what was known as the ‘Unborn’.
Aren't you a lil' cutie?
The creature had been apparently sired by the priest with some other abomination, and it was going after Phil Collins. The Unborn was vomiting vile acids and spraying deadly body secretions around, slaying some pumpkin adventurers.

Many of the main adventurers shifted their attention to fight this abominable creature instead of the zombies. And they succeeded in slaying it, though it was terrifyingly dangerous.

The creature had loot: a mighty ring known as the ‘Two Ring’, a tooth necklace that accelerated a warrior’s combat potential and a piece of flesh from the creature itself. Phil was given the flesh, but even smelling it would make him gag before even thinking of trying to say, eat it.
[High Pitched Squeal] KEEP IT AWAY!

Zanuka convinced the group to let her take the ‘Two Ring’. Some other creature was coming from below, and she felt that combining it with the ‘One Ring’ would allow her to clash with it. They agreed. Olly took the Tooth Necklace – he would be a true berserker with such an item.

After taking a moment to rest, revive and prepare, a voice both beautiful and foul called from the dark:

Unknown Voice: ‘You slew my offspring, prepare for death or assimilation.’

A giant, crustacean-like creature made of human-like flesh emerged from the vault. It had many tentacles and a large mouth, but it was hard to see if she had eyes…

Apparently this thing was originally Chelsea, the little girl who fell into the well, now possessed by some goddess.

Enough tentacles and appendages to make Slaanesh blush ;)

Final Battle
Chelsea of the Well, Avatar of the Flesh Goddess

Upon Chelsea entering the temple, the piece of Mutated Flesh that Phil Collins held suddenly changed – it looked appetizing – a vibrant hue and delicious. Farseer Phil thought, ‘sure, why not’ when he ate it…

Phil felt great, the meat from the Unborn made him twice as strong, however he also felt strange.

Chelsea lashed out with her tentacles and spewed boiling, corrosive blood on her attackers. Some pumpkin adventurers fell, while others returned some devastating ranged attacks to try and bring her down.

Zanuka, surging with power, prepared to attack in close quarters. However, an unusually reserved but focused Kharn stepped up. He weaved his way through the flailing tentacles and approached Chelsea’s face. With the Murderer’s Dagger he found at the beginning of the adventure, he stabbed a weak, critical location on her head. Chelsea screeched and thrashed wildly for several seconds before suddenly collapsing inanimate on the ground. She was dead, the dagger lodged firmly into her cranium.

Although it was quite anticlimactic, Kharn the Betrayer succeeded in slaying Chelsea with one blow.

In her remains they found… a Flux Capacitor?

Caligore immediately took the Flux Capacitor and put it into the ‘toaster’ belonging to Ralf. The device hummed to life, creating a portal that would return the respective adventurer to where they needed to go…

General Epilogue

In the end it was a great massacre at the village. So many sins and atrocities were buried in the earth, with two few able and willing to dig them up. Some truths will remain lost to the sands of time, many perhaps best that way - but one truth remains: one does not simply kill a deity.

With the portal device complete and active, the survivors could make their way home when they so wished… or onto another battle. After all, there is only war… and war never changes.

Individual Epilogue

Spider Ralf?!

Ralf

Ralf had the time of his life in the cursed town - so much looting and killing. He entered the portal, returned to his Warboss drenched in loot but looking like a complete moron with his dress and other gear. The Warboss was the only one to challenge him for his loot and question ‘how good hiz brayne werked’, especially with the pink ribbon on his head. It didn't matter about the ancient armour and the King's shield - he looked 'too stoopid'.

Ralf at that point snapped and concluded HE would be the new boss. Wrapping up the Warboss with his web shooters and chopping off his head, Ralf became the new Warboss, his pink dress flowing in the wind. On occasion, he would still read the diary (or pretended to as he couldn’t read) that the group found on the man wearing human skin, and would often open the locket they found on the dead mother. He would cry a tear, then rub his finger over the picture of the little girl…

Ralf eventually grew bored of leading a Waaagh, so he became an independent killing machine, ambushing random victims across time and space with the power of his Portal Toaster.

Olly McFlurry

Taking his pet dragon, living shroud, pumpkin whistle and other loot, Olly returned home to the Skorne Empire to live as he did before. However, there the dragon grew to its full size, a great creature able to carry Olly on his back with ease. In his world he became a legend to his own kind – the tale of a Titan Gladiator who returned from a nightmare with a dragon, who later would ride into the sky and beyond.

Although deep inside Olly’s heart he was gentle and a simpleton, he would later inspire others with his legend.

Kharn the Betrayer

Kharn wasn’t satisfied when the battle was over. Before returning to his home dimension to embark on a new quest of slaughter, he felt inspired to do what the party had accidentally done to the forest – set something on fire. He looked toward the village in the distance and thought: BURN! Needless to say, he felt his mission had been accomplished... for now.

After all, at the end of the day, Gorechild was always thirsty for more blood.

Farseer Phil Collins

The piece of mutated flesh that Phil ate turned out to be a grave mistake. The flesh mutated him into a new ‘unborn’ – an insane creature craving fresh, warm flesh. When he transformed on his Craftworld, he lashed out and butchered some of his kin. However, with the effort of the brightest Eldar minds, they managed to seal him in stasis before he inflicted too much damage. While he was in that state they were researching a way to bring him back from beyond whatever new form his body had taken.

If this was a dream, the one small sane part of him wished to reawaken… for if he slept, it was surely a deep slumber. In his dreams he thought he could hear Olly McFlurry taunting him, as if it were karma's repayment from the deadly game of Hangman. All he could hear from Olly was: 'Ass.'

Caligore Luminum

Caligore didn’t stay around or say goodbye when the portal presented itself. He returned to the existence he had known before, mentally trying to forget the allies he had to fight alongside with. If it were real, he did not want to consider himself a heretic. If it was a dream, then he would need to seek mental discipline.

Both outcomes were undesirable in the service of the Emperor, and he only lived to serve.

Zanuka Natsume

Being Zanuka’s home world, she felt she should at least rally the last survivors and inspire them to create new lives elsewhere. She told the shop keeper to take the orphan boy to an orphanage or adopt him, as he had nothing left.

Zanuka then visited her old tavern one last time. It looked ghostly with no patrons or any signs of life. Closing the door behind her, she could see Kharn with a flamethrower setting the village ablaze. She rushed the shop keeper and the boy to leave, then turned around and shrugged. She didn’t mind the place burning up - it was a fitting end to what had become a horrible memory.

As to whether she entered the portal to find a new dimension or left for a new place to explore, only she knew the answer.

Pumpkin Party

The Pumpkin Leader and surviving members of his mercenary force left while the main group inspected Chelsea’s corpse. They had endured enough and saw that no loot worth taking was around. They were aware how they were outnumbered and suspected betrayal from some of the main group's party members. So they inspected their dead for supplies then left with what they had – ‘cut their losses and move on’ was the logic.

The leader had to think of his wife who was preggers after all.

Mysterious Man

Escaping the village that had been set on fire by Kharn, he made his way to the temple. Aside from finding the butchered remains of cultists, dead pumpkin people and other disgusting things splashed and smeared everywhere, there was a portal leading out. He entered the portal and returned home, wherever that was. Apparently it was Melbourne in Australia.

No one may understand how he got there, himself included, but he counted himself lucky to be home.

Little Boy

Zanuka sent the orphan boy to the shop keeper. Perhaps he went to an orphanage. How did he grow up with such scarring? Did he still think of his pet spider, his parents or the creepy little girl? The village burned behind him as he left on the wagon; his face having a completely blank expression as they rode onward.

“What do I do now?” he thought. A fair question indeed.

Shop Keeper

Following the advice of Zanuka, the shop keeper gathered his remaining goods, took the one surviving boy and left for somewhere far away. He had to leave quickly though, as Kharn had set the village on fire. His mind now scarred forever, he propped up Olly’s dead cat (complete with gemstone) next to him and said:

“Okay Mr.Snuggles, time for a new adventure.”

Warriors Arcanus and the King

The Warriors Arcanus and the King’s Spirit were completely unaware when Ralf looted them. They were so distracted when the rest of the party argued with them that they were oblivious to the cunning Ork’s activity.

When they departed for the afterlife, the King found himself hilariously unprepared – he was missing his armour and shield – essentially naked with a sword. The Warriors Arcanus shrugged and assured him he would find new equipment in this next life, the Eternal Battlefield.

After all, there is only war… and war never changes.
