Space Marines vs. Aliens - Mission Report #2

Once more, back into the fray!

Welcome to our second Mission Report! Today we have Space Marines of the Black Templars Chapter facing against an icon of sci-fi pop culture: Aliens (you know, the lovely face huggers, acid blood and whatnot) :)

This is a Skirmish Game, where there's a lot more action and strategy than a battle, but less miniatures. This is great for small armies or 'commando' style operations. So we've got three Space Marines and five aliens battling it out in a ruined (or corrupted) spacecraft.

If you wanted the video battle report instead, go here: https://www.warsurge.com/sm-vs-alien-r2/

We've got a video intro if you prefer something a little flashy for some backstory...

... Otherwise, here's the text version:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is Brother Arcadius of the Black Templars.

I and two other initiates were fighting against unidentified xenos when a section of this abandoned spacecraft collapsed… separating us from our Crusader Squad.

It began when we intercepted a distress signal left by Imperial researchers and accompanying bodyguards. After entering the spacecraft, we were attacked by unidentified xenos, akin to the Tyranid Genestealer, but darker, sleeker and with blood similar to highly corrosive acid.

My party has ventured deeper into the vessel. We have discovered the dead Imperial researchers:  most appeared to be mauled, floating in a pool of xenoplasm with a massive wound in their chest area. Nearby are small, arachnid-like xenos corpses.

We are currently entering a deeper section of the ship, looking for an alternative exit and collecting any data along the way. This section is heavily corrupted with xenos growth but we will not yield to the xenos scum - they will be cleansed from the galaxy.

No pity. No fear. No REMORSE.

Brother Arcadius out.

Thought for the day: Only in death does duty end.

The Armies

Here's the profiles we're using today:

When playing, I accidentally made the Aliens attack at Fast speed (which was what they were before I updated their profiles) and also forgot to add the strength to my Sergeant's Chainsword. Whoops! That's what you get when you're not used to filming and playing... and make last minute changes that you forget to factor in :P

Without further ado, let us begin!

Mission Objectives:

1) Claim Objectives:
Each Objective is worth 2 Mission Points when held uncontested per Turn. Each objective is worth 3 Mission Points when games instead.

There's a Data Room (Templar Deployment Zone), Nursery (Alien Deployment Zone) and a central Hive.... blob.

2) Slay and Survive:
For each 25% of your army that is on the table and alive, you gain 2 Mission Points. Units in Reserve at the end of the game count as destroyed.

Deployment Map

After rolling a dice, it was determined that the game would be a set length of 4 Turns (Skirmishes are shorter than battles for game Turns, but are action packed).

Deployment

The Aliens deployed 3 Alien Warriors into an offensive position to assault and claim the central objective (hive), leaving one camped on an objective (Alien Nursery) and one hiding along a corridor, perhaps to strike the far objective in the Black Templar deployment zone.

The Black Templars left their Bolter Marine on an objective (Data Room) while the Flamer Marine and Sergeant were deployed to claim the central objective (hive).

Turn 1

It didn't take long for the fighting to begin!

The Black Templars started by moving and using the flamer on an Alien, but the creature managed to dart out of harm's way by using it's AEGIS save! The Aliens attacked the Flamer Marine, the Sergeant charging in to carve up some xenos.

Although the Sergeant slew an Alien, two more came along and managed to kill the Black Templar with the Flamer.

Due to a lack of Command Points, the Sergeant could only watch as the Flamer Marine was slain by several Critical hits...

As the Sergeant was more than 3" away from the objective, the Alien held two objectives this Turn!

Turn 2
Current Scores:
Aliens = 4 Mission Points
Black Templars = 2 Mission Points

The Black Templar won the roll to act first and fired his Plasma Pistol, finishing off an injured Alien then charged in to fight the other. He would avenge his fallen brother!

The fight was quite tricky, the Black Templar and Alien sustained damage, but the Alien in the Corridor arrived to aid it's kin... and together they were a serious threat to the Sergeant...

Turn 3
Current Scores:
Aliens = 6 Mission Points
Black Templars = 4 Mission Points

The Sergeant managed to kill another alien, but perished in the process. The Aliens had the clear superiority now, able to hold the central objective unopposed. The injured Alien withdrew deeper into the hive, in order to become difficult to shoot for the remaining Templar, should he dare to seek it out...

The mission was practically lost to the Templars, but it wasn't over yet. The remaining Templar was feeling gutsy to try and hunt down the Alien and avenge (or perhaps 'rescue' from a lore perspective) the fallen!

Turn 4

Current Scores:
Aliens = 10 Mission Points
Black Templars = 6 Mission Points

The last Black Templar moved in... and the player challenged the other to fight him. Using the sentinel buff, the Templar fired his bolter but the Alien passed it's saves.

The Alien assaulted the Templar, but failed to do any damage... and that was the end of the game!

-END GAME-

Final Scores:
Aliens = 15 Mission Points
Black Templars = 10 Mission Points

The final score was increased by how much % of each player's army survived.

Victor: Aliens!

Yes, the Aliens won, but the Black Templars were not wiped out. In fact, the damage inflicted upon each other turned out pretty even.

Had the dice even been a little different, the Black Templars would've smashed the Aliens! It was actually pretty intense.

Thanks for reading, hope you enjoyed the game.
